The Night Wolves "celebrated" the anniversary of the first bombing of Stalingrad. They drove around the city accompanied by a special traffic police battalion and donated an old radiator to a tractor factory.

On March 1, the town of Peresvet in the Sergiyev Posad district of the Moscow region hosted a dog sledding competition. Both adults and children took part in the sporting event — around one hundred participants in total — together with their dogs of various breeds. In 2014, the competition was held for the thirteenth time. According to the organizers, over the years dog sled racing has evolved from a simple hobby into a true sport. On the night of Sunday, February 23, protesters on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) stormed Viktor Yanukovych's residence in Mezhyhirya, near Kiev. After Yanukovych fled the capital on February 22, the guards began allowing anyone inside who wished to see the conditions in which the ousted president had been living.

On the morning of February 23, a group of political activists held a rally in solidarity with Ukrainian opposition figures who, after months of confrontation with the authorities, managed to secure the president's resignation. The activists set fire to car tires in the center of St. Petersburg and unfurled Ukrainian flags, after which they were detained by the police. The organizers of the protest explained that they had decided to mark the “Maidan holiday” in this way and to express their protest against “imperial chauvinism.” Among the participants in the event was the artist Petr Pavlensky.

On Friday, February 21, the Zamoskvoretsky Court in Moscow began announcing the verdict in the Bolotnaya case. The court found eight defendants guilty of participating in “mass riots” and attacking police officers. However, the verdict was not read to the end — an additional hearing was scheduled. Meanwhile, around 400 citizens gathered outside the courthouse (including political activists, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and members of the band Pussy Riot). The police detained half of them: taking them to local precincts and issuing reports for violating regulations on public assemblies and pickets. All detainees were released shortly afterward. February 15 marks the anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. The war, which lasted from 1979 to 1989, claimed the lives of more than 14,000 Soviet soldiers and became one of the most traumatic conflicts of the late USSR, influencing domestic policy and accelerating the crisis of the Soviet system.
